Cosmological Challenges in Theories with Extra Dimensions and Remarks on the Horizon Problem
We consider the cosmology that results if our observable universe is a 3-brane in a higher dimensional universe. In particular, we focus on the case where our 3-brane is located at the Z2 symmetry fixed plane of a Z2 symmetric five-dimensional spacetime, as in the Hořava-Witten model compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold. As our first result, we find that there can be substantial modifications ...
متن کاملSupersymmetric Large Extra Dimensions and the Cosmological Constant Problem
This article briefly summarizes and reviews the motivations for — and the present status of — the proposal that the small size of the observed Dark Energy density can be understood in terms of the dynamical relaxation of two large extra dimensions within a supersymmetric higher-dimensional theory. 1. Reading the Tea Leaves The start of the new millenium finds the fundamental sciences at an odd ...
متن کاملThermal background can solve the cosmological moduli problem.
It is shown that the coherent field oscillation of moduli fields with weak or TeV scale masses can dissipate its energy efficiently if they have a derivative coupling to standard bosonic fields in a thermal state. This mechanism provides a new solution to the cosmological moduli problem without creating too much entropy at late time.
متن کاملCan codimension - two branes solve the cosmological constant problem ?
It has been suggested that codimension-two braneworlds might naturally explain the vanishing of the 4D effective cosmological constant, due to the automatic relation between the deficit angle and the brane tension. To investigate whether this cancellation happens dynamically, and within the context of a realistic cosmology, we study a codimension-two braneworld with spherical extra dimensions c...
متن کاملThe Cosmological Constant and Warped Extra Dimensions
Abstract We study the behavior of a general gravitational action, including quadratic terms in the curvature, supplemented by a compact scalar field in 4 + 1 dimensions. The generalized Einstein equation for this system admits solutions which are compact in one direction and Poincaré invariant in the remaining directions. These solutions do not require any fine-tuning of the parameters in the a...
